Nous AI Newsletter — Subscription Terms

What Nous+ costs, what it includes, how the free trial and renewal work, and how to cancel.

The licence

Your use of the Nous AI Newsletter app is governed by Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement, the standard licence that applies to apps distributed on the App Store: https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula/. There is no separate custom licence for the app. The terms on this page are the commercial terms of the subscription, which sit alongside it, together with the terms for the Nous voice below, which apply from version 1.2.

What Nous is

Nous is a daily edition of ranked artificial-intelligence news. Each day it reads publicly available sources — RSS and Atom feeds, Hacker News, arXiv, and public posts from a curated list of accounts on X — ranks what it finds, and publishes a fixed edition of roughly twelve to twenty items with automatically written summaries and a short executive brief.

The subscription

Nous+ is sold as two plans. They unlock exactly the same things and differ only in how long a period lasts and what it costs.

PlanLength of a periodPrice (United States storefront)Free trial
Nous+ MonthlyOne month, renewing automaticallyUS$2.99 per month1 week
Nous+ YearlyOne year, renewing automaticallyUS$24.99 per year1 week

Payment is charged to your Apple ID at the end of the free trial, and then at the start of each renewal period — monthly or yearly, according to the plan you chose. The subscription renews automatically unless it is cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.

Cancelling

Cancel at any time — during the trial or after — at https://apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions, or in Settings on your device under your Apple ID, then Subscriptions. Cancelling stops the next renewal; the subscription keeps working until the end of the period you have already paid for. Cancelling during the free trial stops it before any charge is made.

Any unused part of a free trial is forfeited if you buy the subscription before the trial ends. Refunds are handled by Apple, not by Alp Özcan: request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.

What the summaries are, and are not

Nous does not write the news. It selects from what other people published and summarises it automatically, using large language models. Summaries can be incomplete, out of date, or simply wrong, and ranking is a judgement made by software. Every item links to the original, and the original is the authority.

Nothing in Nous is financial, legal, investment or professional advice, and none of it should be relied on as the sole basis for a decision.

Third-party content

Headlines, excerpts and links belong to the publications that produced them, and are shown here under the terms on which those publications make their feeds available. Nous does not reproduce full articles. If you are a publisher and want your feed removed, or you believe something here infringes your rights, write to hi@alp.me and it will be dealt with promptly.

Public posts from X are shown with their author and a link to the original. They are third-party statements, not statements by Nous. If a post — or any other item — shown in an edition is objectionable, report it from the item in the app, or by writing to hi@alp.me. Reports are read by a person, and an item that should not be there is removed from the service.

Using the service

The app's connection to the server is authenticated, and the service is for use through the app. Do not attempt to access it by other means, to bulk-extract the archive, or to redistribute the editions as your own product. Permission to use the service may be withdrawn for abuse.

The Nous voice (version 1.2 and later)

Listen reads a summary of the day aloud with the Nous voice, a speech model that is downloaded to your device and runs there. Its audio is generated by a machine and is not a recording of a person. The voice is based on Supertonic 3 by Supertone, which is distributed under the BigScience Open RAIL-M License; a copy is published at licenses/supertonic-openrail-m.txt and is shown in the app's acknowledgements.

That licence requires everyone who uses the model to follow its use restrictions, and so does this service. By using Listen you agree not to use the voice, or anything it produces:

  1. in any way that violates any applicable national, federal, state, local or international law or regulation;
  2. to exploit, harm or attempt to exploit or harm minors in any way;
  3. to generate or disseminate verifiably false information or content with the purpose of harming others;
  4. to generate or disseminate personally identifiable information that can be used to harm an individual;
  5. to disseminate its output in any context without expressly and intelligibly stating that it is machine generated;
  6. to defame, disparage or otherwise harass others;
  7. to impersonate, or attempt to impersonate, others without their consent;
  8. for fully automated decision-making that adversely affects an individual's legal rights or creates or modifies a binding, enforceable obligation;
  9. for any use intended to, or which has the effect of, discriminating against or harming individuals or groups based on online or offline social behaviour or known or predicted personal or personality characteristics;
  10. to exploit the vulnerabilities of a specific group of people based on their age or social, physical or mental characteristics, in order to materially distort the behaviour of a person in that group in a way that causes, or is likely to cause, that person or another person physical or psychological harm;
  11. for any use intended to, or which has the effect of, discriminating against individuals or groups based on legally protected characteristics or categories;
  12. to provide medical advice or interpret medical results;
  13. to generate or disseminate information for use in the administration of justice, law enforcement, immigration or asylum processes, such as predicting that an individual will commit fraud or a crime.

These restrictions are the licence's own (its Attachment A), restated here in plain words; if the two ever differ, the licence text governs.

Availability and changes

Nous is offered as it is, without a guarantee that it will be available at any particular time, that any particular source will keep being carried, or that an edition will be published on any given day. Sources, ranking and features can change. If the service is discontinued, active subscriptions will be allowed to lapse rather than being renewed, and Apple's refund process remains available.

If these terms change, the date at the top of this page changes with them and this page is the current version.
